The Beautiful Picturesque Town of Hoi An - Vietnam

Written By The Travelling Postcard on 2 April 2014 | 05:52

We arrived into Hoi An and we were taken aback by the beauty of this little UNESCO World Heritage town. It's quaint yellow tiled buildings created a wonderful fairy tale town in the midst of such a busy country as Vietnam.

History - Visiting the Old Town

Dylan and I strolled through the cobbled streets of the old town and went to visit some of the old houses. There are ticket booths for the old town scattered throughout Hoi An so it's not difficult to find it and gives you 5 entrances to several temples, houses and museums available. The ticket only cost a mere 120,000 dong each ($6) and was valid for 24 hours, if planned correctly, can be worth two days!

The old town is wonderful and we got to visit the Japanese Bridge constructed in 1593, Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, the Old House of Phung Hung, the Com Pho Communal House and the Old House of Tan Ky, this wonderfully preserved house used to belong to a Vietnamese merchant. The architecture and history in these buildings brings it's heritage to life.

Hoi An Life

The city comes alive with all of it's handcraft, woodwork and upholstery made by the Vietnamese people themselves. One craft that mesmorises you as soon as you set eyes on them is the Vietnamese Lanterns! They are absolutely exquisite and such an attribute to the town, filling it with life, colour and happiness.

A once major port of Vietnam this town is now bustling with tourism, one of the nations wealthiest places and is a culinary hot spot... Check out our post on the Cooking Class we did here

Alternatively, hire a bicycle and visit some of the beautiful surrounding areas. An activity loved by most people in the group we were travelling with.

Restaurants not to miss in Hoi An

As we arrived very early into the town we went to breakfast whilst our room was being made. We decided to check out Cargo Club... It was delicious! It has a range of breakfast menus for you ranging to all types of western breakfasts (we had English and Parisian).

For lunch we went to Bale Well to have the best spring rolls in all Vietnam! We talk about this more on this post

For dinner we decided to try out Morning Glory Streetfood restaurant. This is houses in historic premises and has a wide array of dishes for all likes specializing in street and Vietnamese food dishes. I thoroughly enjoyed my chicken noodles and spring rolls, however, Dylan wasn't too keen on the meatballs he oredered! Great place and always buzzing.

Nightlife in Hoi An

In the evening this town comes alive with street stalls, enjoying a drink on the riverbank and lit up with lanterns and candles. Hoi An felt very safe and easy to get around, however, you should avoid walking home alone at night as many streets are in complete darkness later on in the evening.

Tell us your Hoi An stories! What was your favourite thing about it? Or least favourite thing?

We would love to hear from you!
